Hi Danni,
Fun show. ‘Semi-random question. If one is selling a nice woman’s blouse and it has shoulder pads & is pretty obviously vintage, should you put “vintage” in the title or just market it as a nice shirt and include the shoulder pad information in the description? I was just wondering if Vintage in the title might actually turn people away who are just looking for a nice quality shirt. Thanks!
Marie
Marie it will depend on who your customer is!
If you are selling to people looking for vintage clothing, then vintage is an important word.
If you are selling to someone just looking for something to wear that looks cool, then vintage may not be appealing to them.
If you have a specific item we can look at be sure and submit it over on the Niche to Profit Facebook group and we’ll put it on the show!
Regarding the Phaltzgraff set of dishes- was that shipping charge based on where you are in Vegas? Wouldn’t shipping be considerably lower for a buyer closer to the seller? Also regarding the Final Value fees on shipping- if you add the shipping cost into your sale price for Free Shipping, aren’t you still paying final value fees regardless once sold?
Yes it was calculated shipping and I am probably zone 8 so the worst case, or close to worst case scenario. Problem is you don’t know where your customer is going to come from and if you use FREE shipping then you can actually determine whether taking a best offer suits your margins or not… and you could actually make more than if you charge calculated shipping!
As far as this goes I don’t think the shipping would get much lower even if $20 less it’s pretty inconsequential in the whole picture as you want someone who is shopping because they need this item, not because they are looking for the lowest price… in that scenario the price as long as it seems fair will work!
Exactly! So why pay another fee for a broken out shipping cost which doesn’t actually end up giving you the whole shipping amount? Many more times than not you will pay less in shipping than you estimated for your Free shipping total amount and the customer won’t care because they didn’t pay separate shipping!
There are so many benefits to using Free Shipping in some form – check out show #27 and #17 we talk more about Free Shipping.
Thanks for watching!
Since the dishes won’t sell at that price, I still think it’s a better option to use calculated shipping hoping for a buyer in the region. I can purchase a full set of Phaltzgraff within a few states from me for only $17 shipping. Also, I don’t think it’s wise to imply to listeners that adding shipping on results in more Final Value fees, it actually may be less for nearby shipping vs if you pad your price for across the country. Perhaps suggesting using a local Facebook group or Craigslist is wise as well since there are no fees, no shipping and no worry for breakage. Of course, lowering the price is the quickest option for a sale.
Free Shipping is not just about the dollar amount. It is added value! It is something customers filter for… meaning if you charge shipping more customers don’t see your items for sale in a competitive world this is not good.
The point on the fees is that if you are getting a Top Rated Seller discount on fees, you will NOT get this on your broken out shipping.
You are right on selling local if you can! Good point!
You mentioned that you were going to cover how to get rid of the competitive row of items at the bottom of our listings in one of your shows. Could you tell me which one covers that segment? Thanks Danni.
